United States 7 GHz Spectrum Field Call with Förmögen RF Drive Test Software & LTE 4G Tester tools

United States 7 GHz Spectrum Field Call with Förmögen RF Drive Test Software & LTE 4G Tester tools

The United States has completed a pre-standard 6G outdoor field call using the 7 GHz frequency band at an operational mobile network site in Concord, California. The test was announced on October 15, 2026, by Verizon and Ericsson, who described it as the world’s first outdoor 6G field call.

The trial used experimental 6G radio equipment with a 400 MHz carrier bandwidth. The main objective was to check radio performance outside a laboratory and understand how 7 GHz signals behave under actual field conditions.

The successful call confirms that the experimental equipment can establish a connection outdoors. It does not represent a commercial 6G network launch. So, now let us see how United States Completed First Pre-Standard 6G Outdoor Field Call Using 7 GHz Spectrum along with Smart LTE RF drive test tools in telecom & RF drive test software in telecom and Smart 4G Tester, 4G LTE Tester, 4G Network Tester and VOLTE Testing tools & Equipment in detail.

6G Field Testing Using 7 GHz Spectrum

The 7 GHz frequency range is being studied for future mobile networks because it can support wider channel bandwidths than many existing 4G and 5G deployments.

Wider bandwidth can increase data capacity, provided the radio conditions, antenna configuration and network equipment support it.

However, propagation becomes more difficult as operating frequency increases. Signal attenuation through walls, glass and other building materials must be considered when planning coverage.

The outdoor test provides initial information on whether 7 GHz radio equipment can operate from an existing mobile network location.

Technical Configuration of the Field Trial

The trial used a dedicated 6G proof-of-concept base station installed at the commercial network site.

The user equipment was placed inside a mobile enclosure measuring approximately 12 feet by 8 feet. This enclosure had a separate power supply, battery backup and different wall and window materials.

The arrangement allowed engineers to examine radio performance under different conditions without changing the complete test setup.

The experimental system operated with a 400 MHz carrier and a pre-standard 6G software stack.

Since 6G specifications are still under development, the equipment cannot be treated as a final commercial 6G implementation.

Outdoor Coverage and Indoor Signal Penetration

A major part of the testing involved examining how radio signals travel between the base station and the receiving equipment.

Engineers considered line-of-sight conditions, where the radio path is relatively clear, and non-line-of-sight conditions, where buildings, trees or other objects affect reception.

The wider test program also examined signal penetration through different types of glass and wall materials.

At 7 GHz, these measurements are useful for understanding possible coverage limitations and determining whether additional sites or indoor radio systems may be required.

The confirmed result was an outdoor field call. The published announcement does not provide measured indoor coverage distances or penetration-loss values.

    Throughput, Latency and Connection Stability

The trial was designed to evaluate throughput, latency, coverage and connection stability under different radio conditions.

For network engineers, these measurements help determine how consistently a radio connection performs when the distance, obstacles and signal conditions change.

A 400 MHz carrier provides substantial channel bandwidth, but the available bandwidth alone does not determine actual user throughput.

Performance also depends on signal quality, modulation, antenna design, interference and radio resource allocation.

The published results confirm successful field validation but do not disclose measured peak throughput, latency figures or maximum coverage distance.

RF Testing Requirements for Future 6G Networks

As 6G equipment moves into outdoor trials, field testing will become necessary for checking radio coverage and network performance.

Engineers will need to record signal strength, signal quality, throughput, latency and connection stability at different test locations.

Drive testing can help identify coverage gaps, weak signal areas and changes in performance caused by buildings or terrain.

Indoor testing will also be required to measure signal loss between outdoor base stations and indoor receiving devices.

The exact measurement parameters will depend on the final 6G specifications and the capabilities supported by future test equipment.

    Next Steps for 6G Development

The completed field call provides initial results for further 6G radio development.

Additional testing will be needed to study mobility, interference, coverage distance, capacity and performance under different network loading conditions.

The results can also support future decisions on spectrum use, radio equipment design and base station deployment.

For now, 6G remains in the research and testing stage. Commercial network deployment will depend on finalised standards, spectrum availability, device support and successful field validation.
